What I've been up to...

Over the past couple of weeks, I have literally been devouring books! I cannot seem to be able to put down what I am reading at any given moment. Of course, I do for the kids and daily stuff, but when I get me time, I cannot read enough.

My book club is next week, and I really felt the need to be done early. I had not finished the two previous books because of being so tired, so I also wanted to be able to sit down and say that I was all caught up. I am not usually delinquent in finishing the book, but the pregnancy has made me so tired! So, I was determined!

I thought I'd say a word about what I've been reading.

This month's pick (by my friend, Lisa) was "Rooftops of Tehran" by Mahbod Seraji. I won't say much about this one because our club has yet to discuss it, but I have to say that I read it in 2 days, and could not put it down. I am fascinated about books that take place in the middle East, and this work of fiction was no exception!

The month before we were to read "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Ann Barrow. It was my pick, and I felt awful about not having finished it. I have to say that initially, I had a hard time getting into the letter writing format and there were a lot of characters writing letters! By the second half of the book, however, I could not stop. I had no idea that there were islands between England and France nor did I know that they had been occupied by the Germans. This fictional book is based on the time after WWII. I really did enjoy learning a lot of the back story about this part of the world during that tumultuous time. Again, a great read!

The month before this one, my friend, Sydney, picked "Loving Frank" by Nancy Horan. It is a fictionalized version of the real life affair between Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Borthwick Cheney. I felt uncomfortable reading a book about infidelity, and perhaps that was why I had not finished by the time we met. Unfortunately, about a third into the book I had googled Frank Lloyd Wright to see how much of the story paralleled what really happened. It was very close and I spoiled the ending for myself which I won't do here. I did finally finish it, and again, infidelity aside, as it came closer to the proverbial train wreck that was about to happen, I could not put it down.

I am now in the middle of "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Piccoult. Again, this one is full of a lot of ethical issues, so I am not sure how I will feel about it in the end, but I will let you know when it is done.

Therese, like you, I can't get enough of books, but I stick mainly with spiritual stories. I participate in a book club at the Salzmann Library at the Seminary. You should consider it, you may like it! The last book we read was "In This House of Brede" which was a fictional account of a convent in England in the 1950's-60's. I loved it!

Since you like books about the Middle East, have you read "Three Cups of Tea" and "The Kite Runner" and "Seven Splendid Suns"? I enjoyed all of these. The first is a non-fiction amazing story.

Why don't you consider participating in Lara's (Holy Mothering) Pondering Pages Meme on Tuesdays to share some of your thoughts on the books you've read?

Pax!

Hi Therese,
What a brilliant book list! I am scarcely managing the time to keep up with the childrens' missions novels. :P

I am so with you. I read 14 books last month and have already finished 2 books this month. I felt the same way about Loving Frank. I googled it too. I also did NOT love Frank.
