Updates

This is going to be a quick post because, well. after 2 days of running, I am exhausted. I also have my first post-pregnancy migraine. I have issues with migraines except when I am pregnant, so I was wondering when I would get one.

I just wanted to give an Alex update as she had her 2 week check-up today. She is now a whopping 6 pounds, 1 ounce and 20 3/4 inches. The doctor said that her birth height could not have been 17 inches as there is no way that she gained 4 inches (they measured her twice today to be sure). The doctor is pleased with her progress. She has passed her birth weight which is what they like to see at 2 weeks.

Michael had his check-up as well. He is doing well too. We talked about his refusal to potty train. Our pediatrician said that this was obviously a case of him holding out and being stubborn (ya' think?). Her advice: IGNORE POTTY TRAINING! She said that he will pretty much wake up one morning and decide to do it, and that until then, just ignore the issue. We've tried just about everything-stickers, m & m's, praise, and he just won't do it (he totally gets it though). The older boys were pretty easy, both training at 3. Michael is now 4, and I am envisioning not being able to send him to school next year because of this. What do y'all think? When I told Andy what the doctor said, he wasn't too happy about ignoring this. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

PS. Can I tease you and say that it's probably time to take that baby ticker off your sidebar?

Have you asked him why he won't use the potty? Some kids are afraid of them. Mine we all over three y.o. when they finally "got" it. It takes time. Use cotton undies and when they get messed up, you make them wipe themselves w/ paper and/or flushable wipes. I won't get upset about it, because he will "get" it. And, once he does, he may have accidents. Please don't let it "get" to you though.

Praying for you.

augh. potty training. my nightmare. I'm with Sarah. Has he given a reason for not going? Is both pee and poo he refuses to do? James was freaked out by the sound of the flushing toilet. He still hesitates about going to public restrooms without me. Thankfully we usually have a brother along to help. Now I"m going to show my country side/backward West Texan, whatever you want to call it. Peeing outside. Kind of like putting cheerios in the potty for targets but instead you use rocks. Gross I know. And yes I received a couple of those embarrasing calls from school that my child had peed on a tree on the playground. But he didn't start school in a pull-up. :) I feel for you honey. Not a fun thing to be dealing with at any time. Keep us updated and we'll keep throwing ideas at ya'.

Therese...praying that the nasty headache will disappear soon!
As for potty training...I'm with your pediatrician (sorry Andy!). I definitely wouldn't worry about it right now...he's still getting used to all the attention Alex is receiving. Have you tried the little "targets" in the toilet? Is there a patron saint of potty training? If not, there's always St. Rita!!

Hi Therese,
Praying for your migraine - they aren't fun, are they?

Don't worry about potty training - it will happen when he is ready.
Blessings,
Jillian

Sam took forever to toilet train. I thought he was going to go to kindy in nappies. He suddenly decided one day that he didn't want to wear nappies anymore. He started going to the toilet and never ever had an accident. I think it just clicked one day. Of course he had been watching Daniel do it.

Therese, I am going to put on my massage therapist hat for a second. Migraine headaches are a bear to deal with, you can use a hot pack (sock filled with rice, tied and microwaved) on your neck muscles, then stretch your neck by tilting your head in every direction until you feel the stretch, Do you have triggers? Some migraines have food triggers, but some are actually olafactory, (smells) the best way is to keep a little food journal, and when a migraine hits, write down where you have visited in the last 24-48 hours. You may be surprised with the results. Now, the Mommy hat comes on. I had two babies who doubled their birth weight by their second week. My 6lb 6oz boy was 12lbs at his 2 week check up, my 8lb 12oz boy was 14lbs at his 2 week check up, the good news, I delivered both two weeks early! Thank you for sharing the pictures of your baby girl. I am insanely jealous of that...Karyn

Good luck with the potty training!

I had that same "your baby couldn't have grown that much in two weeks" situation with my youngest. Don't you think the nurses that measure our newborns should have to be accurate?? She's adorable BTW.
