The Dentist

Today is everyone's bi-annual appointment. Andy and I have these days down to a science. We have a really great hygienist who sees all of us on the same day. I go in as the first appointment, and Andy brings Michael with him. When I leave with Michael in tow, Andy has his appointment. After school, I bring in all the boys for their cleanings and check ups. We do this every 6 months and it works well. Today is Michael's first appointment, so this afternoon should prove to be interesting.

When I go in, I can expect a few things. I have a tartar problem (don't mean to be gross, but it is genetic), so I know I am leaving with a sore mouth. I also said we have a great hygienist. We are both Italian, and have kids the same age, so a lot of times we feel like we are leading parallel lives. Imagine seeing someone you really click with only once every six months-you'd have a lot to catch up on, right? Every once in a while, Andy complains that we talk too much...sorry, can't help it!

Today, I had a surprise in store for me. I have a cracked tooth! Didn't know because it doesn't hurt! As my hygienist was cleaning my teeth, she didn't say anything about it. She asked if my teeth felt OK, and I said yes all the while thinking to myself, but Andy has a filling that is bothering him. Then the dentist comes in and tells me about this cracked tooth thing. Andy and I both have appointments to address these issues.

Now, I have a bit of a vent. You see, I was one of the first children in my area who had sealants put on. I NEVER had a cavity. Then, boom, when I was pregnant with Peter I had my first (I actually think it was 2 or 3). I looked at the dentist, and said that it wasn't possible because I had sealants. He informed me that sealants don't last forever! So, now, I have had a few cavities in the past few years and now this cracked tooth...what I want to know is if sealants don't last, why not re-apply them on adults? I would think it would save a lot of hassle...instead it is filling city for me...and I am NOT happy about it!

Hope the dentist visit goes well for all of you!

I think you can get sealants as an adult, but you will have to pay full price. It can't hurt to ask anyway. Let me know what you find out. I have several cracked teeth (various reasons, but mostly caused by chewing ice and/or clenching at night - hence the TMJ) and one of the six needing help ended up a crown. Lovely.

I'm sorry. I do feel bad for you.

But be excited for me cause next week I'll have dental insurance. Oh yea! Watch out! Here comes cavity central. Yep, I smell a snickers bar and get a cavity. Leo drinks a Pepsi, eats some candy, doesn't brush and goes to bed. The man has like one cavity. It's just not fair.

I'm a dentist's dream. And next week, it's on. I'll be making appointments for everybody! :)

I am sorry you had a less than ideal appointment. At least no horror stories about Michael's first appointment, right?

That really sucks. Chelsea had her teeth sealed a couple years ago, but they did tell us it would not hold out forever. I wish they would. I never had mine sealed and Lord knows I needed that.

I have never minded the dentist because I've never had a cavity (knock on wood). I hope that doesn't change when I get pregnant, even though I've heard other people's horrer stories! I hope you had a good day!

What a day. It's enough stress just to get myself in to see the dentist let alone my entire family in one day. UGH! Sorry to hear about your cracked tooth. Better fixed now before you can feel it and are in excrutiating pain. I NEED to get some cavities fixed. Problem is, the right side of my mouth is still overly sensitive from the cavities/fillings they put in last year. How will I eat? LOL

2 things...first of all...I'm Italian too!!! And secondly...I don't think it's possible to have a mouth worse than mine. I too have genetic issues and I know I'll end up with false teeth someday.
