I hate Halloween. There. I said it. I have never liked the holiday, not even when I was little. My sister and I have talked about it. My parents weren't big on it. By the time I came around, I was walked down our block by whichever sibling of mine could be dragged into taking me.
As a mom, I put on a brave face every year. My boys usually have pretty good costumes, and we go all out on trick or treating. I am a little late this year, but I have begun the costume hunt. Peter wants to be a football player, and Drew wants to be Pikachu from Pokemon. Sounds simple, right? NOPE!
Every Pikachu costume online is out of stock. I have been placed on the we'll let you know if we get them list-I am not optimistic! I looked on eBay. Basically, unless I want to pay $170 for it, I am out of luck. I told Andy we could do it if we could get a yellow sweatsuit or footie pajamas. Oh, I live in a dream world...yellow is not an "in" color this year. At this point, I am not sure what I am going to do!
Then we move onto Peter. I know that JCPenney has football costumes every year. They have them and they are reasonable. Guess what? They are out-of-stock on both the Packers and the Badgers. Again, what's a girl to do?
Oh, and notice the absence of a costume for Michael. I was in Dallas last Halloween for my college reunion. I left with all of the boys' costumes ready-Peter was a doctor, Drew was Scooby Doo, and Michael was supposed to be a honey pot. Michael threw a fit, and so Andy dressed him in street clothes and dabbed red on his nose and cheeks. He calls that a clown-tell me what you think...
Assuming that he won't dress up this year, Andy wants to do the same thing...I want to throw him in his striped overalls and get a train engineer hat...Andy says he won't wear the hat.
Are you starting to see why I hate Halloween?

oh this should be an interesting halloween!
Girl, I HATE it too! Big time. I will be so glad when my girls don't want to dress up anymore. Yuck!
Yes, the hunt for the perfect costumes is the worst thing about Halloween!
Luke was a doctor last year too! I also hate halloween, I HATE the evil decorations, I hate the "spookiness" it just reeks of satan. How I wish the holiday would just dissappear. One year I had the kids dress up as Saints. We had a knight costume so Luke was St. Michael, Helen was a beautiful princess, so we made her St. Helen, and I forget what Mercedes was, Oh yeah a baby. Two years ago, Luke wanted to be St. Michael again, but this time I found him big really cool wings. Helen was a pirate, and Mercedes was a signorita. Last year Helen insisted on being spiderman, yes man, but the grandmas won (I was afraid she would get made fun of at school) she actually looked really cute. Luke was the doctor and Mercedes was a princess, easy. This year Helen wants to be a character from Star Wars - that might be a challenge. I try to steer them toward cosutmes that are easy, I was a black cat or a cowgirl. I suggested ninja for Luke, he was on board until he decided on stormtrooper, I assume Mercedes will be a princess.....
I am sure you will figure something out!
T~
I hate halloween like I hate school magazine sales - UGH!
The costumes out there are JUNK, ridiculously expensive, the stores are creepy - I mean, who wants to expose their kids to have the stuff in there. Ugh. Just depressing.
If you're interested in anyone being a ninja I could hook you up...blue, black, red...I got 'em all.
Hey, that's an idea - may be we Mom should start a Halloween costume swappy thing?.... I just donated a bunch of costumes - you know with the impending move and all, I purged a bunch of costumes.
But yes I have no idea either what my kids will be this year.
And I love the "CLOWN" - it's just classinc DAD!
Good luck with your Pikachu!
Just out of curiousity, what size is he in case I come across one?....you just never know! :)
Hugs!
Just to throw a thought in. If you hate it why do you continue to celebrate it? With all of the Satanic emphasis on the "Holiday" why would we continue to give him one more avenue to reach our children?
Just a little thought. Not in any way ment to judge anyone. I used to fret the same way all of you are.
Now I think we should all stand together and say ENOUGH!!
My kids know that if they can't make the costume out of pretty much what we already have (I'll buy the occasional dollar store prop) then they can't be it. They come up with pretty good stuff. We do buy "general" costumes after Halloween, when they go on sale, to have on hand for the next years. For instance I bought a skeleton costume last year for $5. So this year my oldest is going to be Captain Barbosa from Pirates of the Caribbean by putting on the skeleton costume and throwing on an old banadana and pirate hat. He got a big old red swing coat of mine for the coat. The 4 and 6 year olds are going to be Super Mario brothers - just red or green shirts and overalls. I agreed to buy them a stick-on mustache each.
I bet if you went to the dollar store you could find something to use as a football helmet and just put him in a sweat suit and pad the shoulders. Or see if one of the teenage boys in your neighborhood has a helmet. I don't know what to tell you about Pikachu. My 4 year old wanted to be him too but that seems tough to do. A friend of mine sewed her son a Pikachu costume 3 years ago, but it wasn't very good. No one knew who he was! Although, he was happy, and I guess that's all that matters! I'm sure it will all work out! Try to enjoy the make-believe of it. If you're going to do it anyway...
